I really enjoyed this book - it really was an immersive experience. The author paints a brilliant picture of the landscape, their experiences and I learned alot about a place I've often fantasized about visiting, which is a bonus. It's non-fiction, and a very pleasant and yet compelling read. Highly recommended.
In her book Once a Land of Birds, Magi Nams serves up a delicious taste of life in New Zealand, but it's not just a travel book. It also describes her family's adventures in their temporarily adopted country; and gives accurate and interesting descriptions of NZ geography, history and flora and fauna. AND Magi provides photos, a map or two, a glossary and reference notes.
But it's not a dry scientific treatise either. Written as a diary, the book engages the reader in the Nams family dynamic as Magi, her husband and two young sons settle down to life, work and school in a land far from their home in Nova Scotia, Canada. Well-written, well-researched and well-documented, it's well worth the read. I'm looking forward to reading her next two books in this trilogy.
After reading Once A Land Of Birds, I came away with a yearning to visit the beautiful country of New Zealand. Magi’s writing has such lyrical quality; I thought her prose could be put to music. Her extensive use of colourful adjectives painted a vivid picture of the land, the animals and particularly the birds that make this country their home.
She also describes the amazing experience her whole family had during their stay in New Zealand from the many joys to some of the challenges of adjusting to this country and its culture so far away from their family home in Nova Scotia. I am looking forward to reading book II in the trilogy Cry of the Kiwi- This Dark Sheltering Forest.
